NZ apartment owners sue for $10 million
Owners of a Wellington apartment block are seeking $NZ12.7 million ($10.28 million) in damages to repair the complex they say is poorly constructed.
The High Court case is believed to be Wellington’s largest claim linked to the “leaky homes” scandal. Among identified problems with the apartment complex are untreated timber, leaking rubber seals and poorly constructed doors, windows, cladding and joints.
They are suing Stadium Gardens’ developer Holmes Construction, James Hardie and the architect Peddle Thorp & Montgomery.
Former administrator Edgewater Apartments, now in liquidation, Wellington City Council, Omega Windows and K Road No 1 have also been named as defendants in the High Court hearing, scheduled to begin next month.
More than 90 families living in the building failed to reach an agreement with the apartments’ owners last year, and say they have already paid more than $NZ1 million ($810,000) in repairs.
The group says it will cost more than $NZ11 million ($8.9 million) to fix the building’s numerous flaws, with the remaining money going towards legal fees.
