NSW quiet on FSL reform

Abolition of the fire services levy (FSL) does not appear to be on the agenda of the NSW Government or of the Opposition.

A spokesman for NSW Opposition Leader Barry O’Farrell told insuranceNEWS.com.au “no announcements have been made on the FSL”.

The office of NSW Premier Kristina Keneally did not return insuranceNEWS.com.au calls on the issue.

Late last month Victorian Premier John Brumby announced that his state will replace the premium-based FSL in line with a recommendation from the 2009 Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission. The new system will come into effect on July 1 2012.

NSW funds its fire brigades and the State Emergency Service through levies on insurance contracts.
