NSW puts CTP fraud mastermind behind bars

The mastermind behind an elaborate scam to cheat the NSW compulsory third party (CTP) scheme has been jailed for at least three years as the state steps up its crackdown on fraudulent claims.

Thamer Ari pleaded guilty to 17 charges last week, including staging two crashes in 2015.

The Iraqi refugee, who is on a bridging visa, will be deported when he has finished serving his jail term.

NSW’s efforts to flush out CTP scammers are making headway, with Thursday’s arrest of a Sydney smash repairer who has subsequently been charged for knowingly participating in activities to make fraudulent insurance scams.

The Strike Force Ravens police team, set up last August to investigate crime syndicates focusing on the CTP program, have arrested six people and laid more than 70 charges related to a combined fraud of $6.2 million.

“Motorists are sick and tired of paying higher premiums because of fraudsters and their illegal activities,” Finance, Services and Property Minister Victor Dominello said.

“Every arrest is a win for motorists. By cracking down on these crooks, the ringleaders and their web of lies, we are delivering a fairer, more affordable CTP scheme.
