North Island counts cost of storm damage, flooding
Landslips damaged seven homes in New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula during a one-in-100-year storm last week.
Heavy rain caused flooding of homes and businesses, and power cuts in Auckland and Northland.
Golden Valley in Coromandel recorded more than 250mm of rain in 24 hours, while the Wairoa River rose by about five metres in a few hours.
The floods and landslips caused several roads closures in the Kawakawa Bay and Clevedon areas, and on Waiheke Island. Five Auckland regional parks were closed, with people relocated to higher ground, while about 400 people were evacuated from campsites in the Hunua Ranges and Tapapakanga Regional Park.
Insurance Council of New Zealand CEO Tim Grafton says the insured damage will not be known for some weeks.
“The priority now is for insurers to get assessors out to communities and get the claims process under way,” he said.
He also called for action to improve community resilience to extreme weather.
