Non-insurance prevalent in Perth market blaze
An iconic Perth market levelled by fire on Anzac Day has left hundreds of uninsured store owners facing an uncertain future.
The Midland Military Markets – a converted army workshop run by the Di Lallo family since 1995 – was destroyed when a blaze that began in a phone shop quickly engulfed the entire complex.
The fire destroyed all but one of the market’s 200 stores and shop fronts. A pub at the back of the market was the only business to emerge unscathed. Fire authorities have estimated the damage bill at $5 million.
Media reports in Perth say the Di Lallo family was insured, but most individual store owners weren’t.
