No damage from Waikato quakes, insurers say
Two earthquakes in Waikato on New Zealand’s North Island have left the region unscathed.
“To date there have been no insurance claims,” Earthquake Commission spokesman Richard Braddell said last week.
The Insurance Council of New Zealand says its members received no claims.
The latest earthquake came last Tuesday – a magnitude-5.5 event centred near Taupo. It followed one measuring 5.2 the previous day, which struck 45km away near Tokoroa and was felt in Wellington.
Government research organisation GNS Science says the quakes, at depths of 108km and 195km respectively, were too deep to cause damage.
By comparison, the devastating Christchurch earthquakes occurred at depths of 8-10km.
