No alarm equals no cover

The NSW State Government is contemplating introducing measures that will see houses without smoke alarms unable to get home insurance cover.

The measures are in response to a series of tragic house fires that have hit the state in the past few weeks.

NSW Emergency Services Minister Tony Kelly is behind the proposals, and says he has already held discussions with insurance companies – which could use the presence of smoke alarms to determine premiums or whether cover is given at all.

Support for the measures will no doubt be strong from NSW Fire Brigades Commissioner Greg Mullins and NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Phil Koperberg, who have both spoken out recently about the need for adequate domestic smoke alarms.
