New strategy to fight vehicle rebirths
Demand for a new theft protection system is gaining popular appeal for the owners of upmarket cars. Their interest is in a new technique that gives special protection against theft with a new marking system being pioneered in Australia by BMW. The prestige car company has launched a state-of-the-art marking and security system designed to combat vehicle re-birthing.
The new system involves “vehicle identification numbers” that consist of 10,000 “datadots”, a clear, durable adhesive sprayed on all major driveline and suspension components. The numbers, containing information on the vehicle that the part originally came from, make it extremely difficult to alter the identity of the car.
National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council Executive Director Ray Carroll said that with around 28,000 cars “rebirthed” each year and $500 million paid out in car theft claims by insurers, datadots are likely to play a vital role in the fight against professional thieves.
