New code of practice takes effect
The revised General Insurance Code of Practice, aimed at giving customers “stronger and clearer rights”, has taken full effect following a 12-month transition period.
Insurance Council of Australia CEO Rob Whelan says the industry should be proud of the new document, which has 49 general insurance companies and more than 100 Lloyd’s Australia coverholders signed up.
The changes, including provisions to help consumers suffering financial hardship and an emphasis on plain English, follow a detailed review and industry consultation.
The first code was introduced in 1994 and it has been reviewed four times since.
