National car theft down
Vehicle thefts have fallen for the ninth consecutive quarter, and more than 70% of stolen cars are being recovered.
In the March quarter, 15,247 vehicles were stolen in Australia – a 6.7% reduction on the March quarter last year.
But the news is not all good. Thefts of passenger and light commercial vehicles rose by 165 in NSW and 37 in Queensland.
The ACT, which is more prone to swings in vehicle thefts due to its smaller population, had a 40% drop in the March quarter, accounting for most of the national downturn.
Theft recovery was highest in Tasmania at 91.6%. In NSW 63.6% of stolen cars were found.
