MP claims 200 policies unpaid from ’06 cyclone

The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) has offered to meet controversial Federal MP Bob Katter to discuss unpaid insurance claims allegedly left unattended two years after Cyclone Larry battered the area around Innisfail in Far North Queensland.

Cyclone Larry caused insured damage estimated at $600 million on March 20, 2006. Mr Katter told the Sydney Morning Herald 200 claims are still outstanding.

Queensland Premier Anna Bligh has also acknowledged there are complex issues involved with unsolved claims, but says people have waited long enough for action.

ICA spokesman Sean Sampson says any remaining claims are likely to concern those involved in high-level dispute procedures.

“There would have to be some reason behind it,” he told insuranceNEWS.com.au. “I have seen some examples of people trying to claim for damage that was sustained through other means, such as previous cyclones or even wear and tear.”

He says Mr Katter has not approached ICA, and the council would welcome a discussion with him.

“We’re happy to work with Mr Katter, if he presents these complaints to us, and work with our members to find a resolution,” he said.
