More trouble for chairlift

An elderly woman has been injured in another accident on Victoria’s troubled Arthur’s Seat chairlift. The 77-year-old’s legs were broken when the chair she was on slipped on the cable, sliding down and slamming into the chair in front.

The chairlift, on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula, made headlines early last year when a pylon collapsed, injuring 18 people and leaving 65 others dangling for several hours. When it reopened in January, owner Richard Hudson told Sunrise Exchange News his public liability premiums had gone from $2000 to $73,000 in four years.

IEA Insurance Brokers obtained public liability cover by developing a program between the Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association and London-based Great Lakes Reinsurance. An IEA spokesman said the chairlift is closed again while WorkSafe Victoria investigates the latest accident.
