‘Many questions unanswered’: state probes landslide

The Victorian government is investigating the cause of a landslide on the Mornington Peninsula last month.

It also aims to identify any mitigation measures needed to avoid similar events in future.

“We need to get to the bottom of what has happened here, because too many people have been let down and too many questions remain unanswered,” Premier Jacinta Allan said.

About 20 homes were evacuated in McCrae and a council worker was injured when a $2 million house slid down a hill into two other properties.

The inquiry will determine the cause and whether it could have been avoided, and the adequacy of preventative measures taken following previous landslides in McCrae.

Locals will be invited to submit their accounts of the incident, and a final report with recommendations to government is slated for later in the year.
