La Nina continues to fizzle out
The relatively uneventful La Nina system continues its decline, with conditions expected to return to neutral early in the autumn, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
Indicators include sea surface temperatures close to neutral levels, increased cloudiness near the Date Line, trade winds near normal across the equatorial Pacific Ocean and a warming central tropical Pacific.
Four of eight international climate models predict La Nina will last through this month but only one model sees it lasting until May. By July all eight models are in the neutral range.
La Nina had relatively little effect on Australian rainfall patterns over the summer, the bureau says.
