Kiwi tractors fire up

With a busy planting season approaching, New Zealand-based insurer Tower is warning the country’s farmers to check tractors for bird nests. It appears birds often build nests in the engine spaces, with the nests catching fire when the tractors begin working longer hours in spring and summer.

Many fires are caused by grass and twigs in or near tractor engines, resulting in considerable property damage.

The best way to avoid a tractor fire? Tower says farmers should keep a well-maintained fire extinguisher on their tractors.
