Jet ski safety record ‘belies disappointing headlines’
Most jet ski riders are “committed to safety” and follow guidelines and responsible boating practices, Club Marine says.
Only 2.8% of the insurer’s jet ski claims involve damage caused by the “personal watercraft”, and less than 1% involve injury to another party.
Club Marine insurance CEO Tim Wiles says while the reckless behaviour of jet ski owners is often highlighted in the media, insurance statistics tell a different story.
“Overall, the safety profile is excellent when we look at how many liability claims we receive where the driver has been negligent,” he said.
“We’re mainly dealing with accidental damage, underwater impact, theft and mechanical issues, which are generally common to most other hull types.
“Of course, there’s always the exception of a small minority whose unruly behaviour causes issues, upsets other waterway users and attracts negative publicity.”
Jet ski registrations have risen 70% in the past decade, and Club Marine says many buyers are “first-time boaties” who may lack knowledge of on-water etiquette and safe boating.
Some people have urged the banning of jet skis on certain waterways and called for temporary boat ramp closures.
“It has been disappointing to see headlines in the media relating to poor conduct by a few jet ski riders, in particular the close distances to swimmers and other boats,” Mr Wiles said. “These incidents serve as a sobering reminder of the need for responsibility and respect on the water.
“It’s important that we work together as a community to educate and raise awareness about these risks and encourage positive behaviours.”
