Investigators probe fatal roof collapse
Loss adjusters are joining government investigators to try to ascertain how a renovated roof at Adelaide’s Riverside Golf Club collapsed last week, killing two women and injuring another eight. They have obtained council records to check whether the dining room at the club was built according to approved plans. The roof’s point of collapse is understood to have been where extensions to the club were made in 1995.
A preliminary report has indicated the truss was the most likely cause of the collapse and the builder of the club’s dining room extension is currently being questioned over its installation. SA Industrial Relations Minister Michael Wright said the preliminary report identified “an apparent failure” in one support end of a large double girder truss.
The investigation will determine whether the wooden truss failed because of overloading from roof tiles, ceiling tiles and air-conditioning equipment.
