Insurers working on WA storm claims

Storms in WA last week have generated 15,500 claims to date, although the Insurance Council of Australia is not yet able to put a financial figure on the cost to insurers.

RAC-WA estimates it will handle up to 7500 claims worth about $10 million.

SGIO told insuranceNEWS.com.au it has received about 4000 claims for home and motor damage from the storms.

“Most of the claims relate to overflowing guttering, damage to carpets and walls as well as damage to fences from strong winds,” a spokesman said. “The most serious damage includes water entering homes and ruining contents.”

The worst-affected areas from last week’s two storms and a mini-tornado are in the Bunbury, Rockingham, Mandurah and Port Kennedy areas, as well as many suburbs of Perth.

RAC-WA says it is dealing with structural damage claims first and settling many fence and glass claims immediately.

SGIO says it has put on more consultants to tackle the increased claims traffic and already has builders on the ground in the worst-affected areas.
