Insurers to front FSL hearing

All insurers invited to a public meeting to explain their removal of the Victorian fire services levy (FSL) have now confirmed they will attend.

CGU will send CFO Stuart Chapman and GM Business Partners Malcolm Freeman to the FSL Monitor’s meeting tomorrow.

The company is “not worried” the monitor will accuse it of over-collecting the levy on premiums, Corporate Affairs Manager David Grabau says.

“We’ve under-collected over the past five years and expect to under-collect on FSL this year,” he told insuranceNEWS.com.au.

“We’ve progressively reduced FSL rates over the financial year and stopped collecting on April 27. Our approach recognised the lack of certainty from not having a known FSL target.

“Consistent with other players, we adopted a tapering model. We thought flat rates would have caused significant issues for intermediaries and policyholders, particularly if renewing in the latter part of the financial year.”

IMA will send EGM Marketing and Reputation Ron Arnold. The insurer underwrites RACV products and is 70% owned by IAG, which also owns CGU.

Allianz will be represented by Chief Technical Officer Richard Feledy, GM Corporate Affairs Nicholas Scofield, CFO David Hosking and General Counsel Mathew Kaley.

QBE will also attend. “We welcome the opportunity to explain premium movements in Victoria and the removal of FSL over the relevant financial years, and also the opportunity to explain how insurance pricing works,” a spokesman said.

The hearing was originally scheduled to last two days but has been reduced to one. Suncorp had already confirmed its attendance.
