Insurers sign on to Iemma’s taskforce

Insurers are falling into line with NSW Premier Morris Iemma's tough stance on repairs to western Sydney homes damaged in a December 6 hailstorm.

Less than a week after Mr Iemma vowed to "name and shame" insurers who were tardy on repair work, seven insurers and the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) signed an agreement with the Government to hasten repairs.

Far from rebutting claims by Mr Iemma they weren't "doing the right thing", the insurers have bent over backwards to appease the Government, signing on to a five-point plan to rebuild some 20,000 homes quickly and safely.

Most repairs are scheduled for completion within 12 weeks.

CGU Head of Claims Phil Gare told insuranceNEWS.com.au the insurer "fully appreciated" the damaged inflicted by the storms.

"We are working hard to ensure all our customers' needs are being met promptly, but inclement weather has unfortunately hampered our progress in some cases," he said.
