Insurers on the ground in Bay of Plenty
Heavy rains last week battered NZ’s Bay of Plenty region, causing damage to more than 160 homes and businesses.
More than 100mm of rain fell on the North Island town of Whakatane in just two hours on Tuesday, forcing 139 residents to evacuate their homes and shelter at a nearby community hall.
Emergency services received more than 300 calls reporting flooded properties in the region.
NZ insurers, unlike many of their Australian counterparts, automatically cover flood and storm damage.
