Insurers offer disaster advice

As Victorians continue to fight some of the worst bushfires in the state’s history, insurers are readying themselves for an influx of claims. They are urging policyholders to register claims as soon as possible and to get authorisation before making any substantial repairs.

The Insurance Council of Australia has released the advice in accordance with its “catastrophe co-ordination arrangements”. CEO Kerrie Kelly says most insurers will be operating around the clock to help customers, but claimants are also able to help themselves by following standard procedures.

Communities in north-eastern Victoria remained under threat late yesterday, having been in the firing line throughout a hot and windy weekend. Things became so dangerous the Victorian Government called on the military, and on Wednesday last week Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock approved the request.

Army fuel tankers were sent to the Mansfield and Whitfield region to help keep firefighters’ vehicles operational. “Because of the difficult terrain and road conditions in the area, army tankers and their crews will provide much-needed fuel supply support through the next few days,” Mr Ruddock said.
