Insurers escape Blue Mountains fire

The NSW Rural Fire Service is continuing to control a bushfire that has burned out more than 15,000ha of public and private land in the Blue Mountains. The fire began on November 14 and has threatened several homes near the town of Blackheath.

But there have been very few insured losses, with most of the fires taking place in the Blue Mountains National Park.

The Insurance Council of Australia says insurers have been very lucky. Some residential evacuations did occur, but crews managed to prevent the fire from reaching homes. The only structural damage was to a small wooden outhouse in the park.

The fire is now within containment lines. With mild weather expected over the next week there is little further threat to homes and businesses in the area.
