Insurance recruitment opening up

The 2002 Hays Personnel Survey reveals a distinct insurance career path opening up to those candidates with little or no industry experience. Although 2001 saw many changes within the industry, employment – particularly temporary employment – is beginning to lift.

The increase in “temp work” resulted from several international and Australian insurers putting a stop on full-time employment.

Jobs in the claims area have been in demand, while the number of underwriting positions are down. The survey said this is due to new technology assisting with the writing of business. Sales is another growth area, with the insurers continuing to increase their sales teams to follow up customers and provide online quotes.

As for salaries, the Hays survey shows that in most cases Sydney staff get more than their counterparts in Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth. Brokers are on a good wicket, with an assistant account executive starting on anything from $38,000 to $59,000 and more senior brokers earning from $80,000 to $160,000.
