Insurance industry ‘must lead, not be a victim’
The insurance industry needs to get on the front foot and lead debate rather than behave like a victim, according to Suncorp Commercial EGM Distribution Andrew Mair.
“Insurers responded splendidly when the major catastrophes hit in recent times, yet we found ourselves pilloried by governments, the media and consumer groups,” he told the Insight Insurance Brokers Association conference in Adelaide last week.
Mr Mair says that while some parts of the industry and the leading associations did respond, it was reactive and did not provide leadership or shape the debate.
He says the industry should educate various pressure groups on what insurance contributes to the economy and communities.
Brokers and insurers should speak with a collective voice on important issues, and make regular contact with government ministers and bureaucrats to help them understand issues and find solutions.
“The insurance industry should shape its own destiny by having a proactive voice, by being innovative and thought leaders,” he said. “Otherwise we will be shaped by others.”
Mr Mair says the industry could be closer to the Federal Government on the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).
“As the NDIS continues to take shape the industry needs to demonstrate that we do have an interest in getting the best result for the whole community and that we have something positive to contribute.”
When Vero interviewed 600 SME owners and managers for its SME Insurance Index last year it found the impact of the year’s disasters had made many more wary of the industry, although the majority were happy with their insurance arrangements.
“The result of the survey highlights the need for the insurance industry to enhance the inherent value of its offering,” Mr Mair said. “This means going beyond pricing.”
