Industry waits for cabinet clarity

Who is the minister in the new Federal Government’s whose responsibility includes the insurance industry? Nobody knows. Despite Governor-General Michael Jeffery swearing in the new ministers in Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s government yesterday, insurance isn’t sitting in the centre of their vision.

The new minister or parliamentary secretary responsible for the insurance industry won’t be known until tomorrow.

In Opposition, Senator Nick Sherry was responsible for banking and financial services but in Government, his portfolio has changed to superannuation and corporate governance.

Senator Sherry told Sunrise Exchange News yesterday that he won’t know if he has retained his insurance brief until administration orders are finalised tomorrow.

And he says he can’t reveal if Mr Rudd has discussed the contents of his portfolio.

“Until those admin orders come through on Wednesday, no-one is really sure exactly what their brief includes,” he said.
