Industry receives Gen Y warning
A social demographer has warned businesses they have to reach out to the younger generation to ensure Australia’s future.
Speaking at last week’s Future Forum in Melbourne, McCrindle Research Director Mark McCrindle said Australia in 2020 will see baby boomers retiring as “Generation Y” workers are reaching their peak.
“We have got to lead, structure and communicate in a way that makes sense to the generation of the 21st century,” Mr McCrindle said.
He says while national growth will double, the birth rate will halve, meaning there will be more jobs and fewer people to fill them.
Mr McCrindle says industries such as insurance – which has long battled to recruit and retain staff – will have to advertise overseas in the search for talent.
