Industry flood inquiry submissions close

The extension for public submissions addressing insurance matters to be made to the Queensland Floods Commission of Inquiry has passed, with all submissions due by June 15.

Public submissions addressing all of the inquiry’s terms of reference initially closed on April 4, but on May 27 Counsel assisting the Inquiry Peter Callaghan SC made a call for further public submissions specifically about the performance of insurers in meeting their claims responsibilities.

“It may be that some Queenslanders have, since [April 4], had experiences about which they feel the commission should hear,” he told the commissioners.

A spokesman for the inquiry told insuranceNEWS.com.au the call for additional submissions about the performance of insurers wasn’t due to a low number of initial submissions but reflected the time taken for claims to be finalised.

The additional submissions are currently with the inquiry’s legal teams, with final numbers yet to be collated, and will shortly be published online.

The spokesman says the schedule for the second round of hearings is currently being compiled, and the performance of insurers will be addressed at these hearings and will also feature in the inquiry’s final report, which is due for publication on February 24 next year.
