Indigenous adviser program secures resilience award
The Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience has announced its award winners for this year.
The Resilient Australia Awards recognise efforts to build community resilience through education and engagement.
The NT Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet has won the Resilient Australia National Award for establishing Indigenous cultural recovery advisers following a review of the December 2022 Timber Creek flood.
The advisers support emergency recovery functions and ensure work is “undertaken in a culturally safe and respectful manner” by liaising with government agencies and delivering community messaging.
The department also took the national government award.
Other awards have recognised universities, community projects and schemes to address mental health.
“This year’s award winners are increasing disaster resilience and preparing Australia to survive and thrive in our hazard-prone landscape,” institute executive director Margaret Moreton said.
“Each project is another step that brings us closer to our goal of safer communities before, during and after disaster.”
