ICA to host more forums on summer catastrophes

The Insurance Council of Australia will hold a second round of consultations for Queensland communities affected by Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the Christmas and New Year floods.

Jasper-related events will be held from March 12 to 14 across Cairns, Innisfail and Port Douglas, allowing customers to talk to insurers about their claims.

The council says more than 9300 claims have been lodged in relation to the cyclone, which hit between Townsville and Cape York Peninsula in mid-December. Estimated losses have reached $278 million.

Consultations on the Christmas and New Year floods will be held the following week. Losses from the floods are put at $968 million from nearly 90,000 claims.

The council says insurers have already closed out 28% of claims relating to the events, but CEO Andrew Hall expects repair works “may take some time”. He encourages policyholders to attend the forum if they require further help with claims.

“We know that communities are still recovering from the impacts of the extreme weather at the end of last year,” he said. “The Insurance Council and insurers remain committed to supporting impacted customers as they navigate this difficult time.”

  • Tuesday March 12, 10am-6pm: Brothers Leagues Club Cairns, 99-107 Anderson Street, Manunda
  • Wednesday March 13, 10am-5pm: Shire Concert Hall, 70 Rankin Street, Innisfail
