ICA supports government-funded COVID-19 vaccine scheme
The Federal Government will fund a COVID-19 vaccine indemnity scheme following consultations with groups including the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA), Australian Medical Association and Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI).
The no-fault scheme will cover the costs of injuries above $5000 due to proven adverse reactions to a COVID-19 vaccination, assisting people afflicted and providing legal risk protection for health professionals and workplaces involved in the roll-out.
ICA says it has been advocating for the scheme for some time and has been working with its members in the healthcare indemnity sector, government and other stakeholders to ensure risks for professionals involved in administering the vaccine are identified and addressed.
“The COVID-19 mass vaccination program is a large and complex undertaking in a rapidly evolving environment,” CEO Andrew Hall said.
“Many insurers are interested in facilitating workplace vaccine programs similar to the annual flu shot once they are able to access this via registered medical providers.”
Health and Aged Care Minister Greg Hunt says the COVID-19 Vaccine Claims Scheme will be administered by Services Australia, with claims assessed by independent experts, and compensation paid based on the recommendations.
ACCI says businesses are committed to playing their part in promoting the vaccination rollout and the scheme removes a hurdle.
“Many employers had indicated that they are willing to assist and are actively considering workplace vaccination programs however, employers like clinicians raised ongoing concerns about indemnity arrangements to cover administration of COVID-19 vaccines,” CEO Andrew McKellar said.
