ICA reveals nearly $600 million in summer nat-cat claims
A tornado in Kurnell, southern Sydney, in December has so far cost insurers $205.3 million, according to figures released by the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) today.
Three-quarters of the 4966 claims were commercial, with the remainder domestic.
ICA GM Communications and Media Relations Campbell Fuller told insuranceNEWS.com.au claims for summer catastrophes have been “slowing quite rapidly”, but they are still coming in.
The Pinery bushfires in SA have cost insurers $171.35 million, with 1997 claims lodged, of which 72% were commercial.
Most of the $150 million in payouts for the Great Ocean Road bushfires covered 220 residential property claims, with only 8% of the total for commercial.
The Yarloop bushfires in WA have prompted 1352 claims totalling $70.3 million, of which 59% is for domestic claims.
Mr Fuller says ICA will conduct a forum in Yarloop on Wednesday, offering guidance to policyholders and updating them on the recovery process.
The meeting will feature representatives from the state and federal governments, Legal Aid WA, the Financial Ombudsman Service, ICA and insurance companies.
Mr Fuller says ICA is monitoring damage from storms at the weekend that damaged a number of light aircraft and buildings in Sydney’s southwest.
