ICA outlines initial losses for Queensland wet weather
The Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) says insurers have received more than 79,000 claims in relation to ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the Christmas and New Year floods, with losses amounting to $743 million as wet weather swept across Queensland.
Both weather events were declared catastrophes, with the floods accounting for about 71,000 claims totalling $541 million, and Jasper incurring $202 million in insured losses. The average claim from Jasper was $25,058, more than three times the average claim from the floods.
ICA has not released an accumulated loss figure for Cyclone Kirrily, which crossed the Queensland coast last week and hit areas between Townsville and Ingham.
Damage from Kirrily was projected to be below initial expectations, but individual insurers reported hundreds of claims, with Suncorp documenting more than 500 as of January 29.
ICA says insurers have received 412,653 catastrophe claims since the start of 2022, amounting to $8.98 billion in insured losses. This figure is dominated by historic floods in NSW and Queensland in early 2022, which accounted for $6.12 billion in losses.
