ICA names code committee
Three people have been appointed to the Insurance Council of Australia’s (ICA) new independent corporate governance committee to monitor and enforce compliance with the new General Insurance Code of Practice.
The consumer representative is Legal Aid NSW Senior Solicitor Julie Maron, who held the same position on the former code compliance committee and also sat on the code advisory panel that worked with lawyer Ian Enright during his review of the code.
The new insurer representative is Ian Berg, who recently retired as VP Australia with FM Global and previously served on the ICA board for five years.
Former Australian Public Service commissioner Lynelle Briggs is the new independent chairman. She was also CEO of Medicare from 2009-11.
“The revised code sets a benchmark for industry self-regulation in Australia, and the members of the code governance committee set their own benchmark in terms of the skills they bring to their roles,” ICA CEO Rob Whelan said.
The committee’s duties include investigating consumer reports of alleged breaches and imposing sanctions on insurers where necessary.
ICA members and other participants have until July 1 next year to transition to the new code.
