Homes lost as Victoria tackles spate of fires

New bushfire dangers emerged today in parts of southeast Victoria.

The state is still tackling blazes that broke out last week, which have destroyed at least 19 structures including homes.

VicEmergency has issued multiple warnings and advice notices today, with residents in some areas told they “are in danger and need to act immediately to survive”.

Smoke and a huge pyrocumulus cloud – or “fire cloud” – could be seen across the Gippsland region.

“Late last week we saw lightning strikes that resulted in a number of fires across the state, but mainly in the east,” Emergency Management Commissioner Andrew Crisp said today in a video broadcast.

“We now have 19 going fires and some of the fires are certainly more serious than others. We have an emergency warning on a fire at Yinnar South at the moment and it is certainly causing some significant issues in relation to that particular community.

“We know these conditions will continue for the next couple of days.

“We’ll then see some milder weather for the state as a whole, and possibly some rain on Wednesday, but we can’t afford to be complacent over the next couple of days.

“The rest of the state is really, really dry. In the north of the state, we’re seeing some very high temperatures again, 36-37 degrees up in the north.

“So this is a challenging time and it’s going to be a very busy time for firefighters and emergency services.”

Premier Daniel Andrews says more information on property losses will be made available later today.

“Some of these places, it just hasn’t been safe to get in,” he said. “So from the air you can see that a roof is down, but you can’t see whether that’s shedding or something else.”
