Home maintenance checks ‘off the agenda’

Allianz says 84% of Australian homeowners do not perform home maintenance checks often enough, even as damage from burst pipes cost $864 million in the past two years.

Regular examination of plumbing, flexi-hoses, possible leaks, and wear and tear are frequently neglected, with time and cost pressures the main reasons.

Checks have “fallen off the agenda” for homeowners, Allianz says, with 13% of more than 1000 homeowners surveyed last month saying they never check their homes, or only do so when an issue arises.

Chief GM consumer Shez Ford says the “future of home insurance in Australia will increasingly depend on proactive maintenance and early intervention. We aim to empower homeowners with the knowledge and tools they need to take preventative steps in maintaining their homes.

“Homeowners have a lot on their plates, but quick, frequent checks could prevent future complications.”

Allianz recommends monthly inspections, but the survey found only a quarter of Australian homeowners check annually, and 16% quarterly.

Now, the insurer is putting educational videos on its website – a fortnightly, seven-part series featuring TV personality Scott Cam called How’s Your House?

The videos explain how to check flexi-hoses, gutters and bathrooms to identify maintenance issues, and offer tips on preventing problems.

“We’re spreading awareness and sharing easy, actionable tips to encourage everyone to take a few minutes to do these small checks and prevent future problems,” Mr Cam said.

Here are some of Allianz’s tips:

  • Flexi hoses – check for cracks, rust or leaks. Replace using a licensed plumber.
  • Roof – clear debris and trim overhanging branches often; install a gutter guard; enlist a professional to check roof condition annually.
  • Bathroom – check for any signs of leaks; reseal grout as needed; clean drains regularly; keep bathrooms ventilated to stop mould.
  • Drainage – clear drains and gutters regularly; use a garden hose to check drains are flowing.
