Growing fuel load sparks call for early fire prep

Queenslanders have been urged to start preparing for the next bushfire season after a wet summer brought significant vegetation growth.

Dry and warm autumn conditions are forecast, which could mean vegetation dries quickly, and mid-autumn fire activity is expected to peak in grassland in western parts of northern and central Queensland.

Ahead of the August fire season start, state firefighters are working with partner agencies to plan hazard reduction burns, and residents have been reminded to carry out mitigation measures such as clearing vegetation, trimming trees, mowing grass, and removing dead leaves and branches.

“Bushfire mitigation is a year-round process and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services is actively working with its partner agencies to strategise for the cooler months, ahead of the start of bushfire season in August,” Minister for Fire and Disaster Recovery Nikki Boyd said.
