GIO won’t pursue government over insulation
Leading personal lines insurer GIO says it won’t pursue the Federal Government to recover claims costs arising from the dodgy home insulation debacle.
More than 100 house fires and four deaths have been attributed to insulation in the wake of the Government’s home insulation program, which was rolled out to 1.1 million houses.
Commentators have suggested that personal lines insurers could pursue the Federal Government for compensation.
Last week a man and his grandson died after a house fire near Parkes in NSW, with neighbours saying insulation had been fitted to the house under the Government scheme.
But a GIO spokesman told insuranceNEWS.com.au the company “firmly rejects” the notion the insurer may seek compensation for applicable claims.
Earlier it said it would examine claims on a case-by-case basis in response to suggestions that insurers won’t pay out if dodgy home insulation jobs result in a house fire.
