Funding boost for Victoria’s bushfire areas

Victorian communities devastated in the February bushfires have received another boost, with the Federal and Victorian governments announcing $193 million will go towards rebuilding communal sites.

Schools, sporting clubs, health and early childhood centres, community hubs, major tourist attractions and natural sites that were damaged or destroyed will be rebuilt or restored under the two-year plan.

The announcement comes after the Victorian Bushfire Appeal Fund Advisory Panel, on the advice of the Rural Finance Corporation, decided to extend grants to rural landowners of more than two hectares, down from five hectares.

This has seen rural property recovery assistance allocation increase from $5 million to $9 million.

Fund spokesman Elisabeth Tuckey told insuranceNEWS.com.au the decision came about after the implementation team who process the applications received numerous letters from those who had just missed out because their properties were just under five hectares.

The Insurance Council of Australia claims 28% of homes lost in the fires were uninsured.
