Flood cover door ajar – just

Opposition to flood clauses in home insurance policies may be weakening, according to a new report from reinsurance broker Guy Carpenter.

Progress on including flood damage in standard home policies is being made after years of procrastination from the industry, following the devastating NSW storms in June for which more than 90,000 claims totalling $1.35 billion were made.

"Although cover for flood is now on the increase in Australia, some of the flooding from this event was excluded from settlement," MD Scott Grove said.

"Most major insurers are examining how to integrate full flood into their standard residential policies, and there is an increasing need for tools and data to help quantify the exposure."

The comments mark a shift in the thinking of Australian insurers, which for years have refused to include flood damage in the wording of standard home insurance policies.

Flood cover is widely available in other countries, including New Zealand, but local insurers have claimed flood risks cannot be managed until more information on flood plains is released by local and state governments.
