Few claims yet as dust storm settles

The widespread disruption caused by last week’s dust storm in NSW and Queensland has so far failed to translate into a major claims event.

The dust storm resulted in projected losses in the tens of millions of dollars, with long delays in air services, high levels of workplace absenteeism, crop losses, reduced retail business and cancelled race meetings.

But the Insurance Council of Australia says there has been no initially flurry of claims reported by general insurers.

Brokers contacted by insuranceNEWS.com.au say it’s really too early to tell how things will pan out.

It’s understood industrial special risk policies will come under some scrutiny, although triggers will vary. Business interruption insurance claims will have to establish material damage.

A CGU spokesman says crop policies typically only cover hail and fire and thus the dust storm is not expected to be an insurance issue.
