Fake broker goes to jail
ASIC continues to apply pressure on insurance brokers who aren’t toeing the legislative line. Among the latest developments – admittedly an extreme case - is the jailing in Melbourne of former broker John Murnane, who got three months for being unregistered, operating a business while bankrupt and breaching a condition of a suspended sentence. He was convicted in December of taking premium money for his own use. The undischarged bankrupt was last registered as a broker in 1996.
