Ex Tropical Cyclone Megan brings heavy rain, flooding
Former Tropical Cyclone Megan has brought heavy rainfall and flooding to the NT after crossing the Gulf of Carpentaria coastline last Monday at category three intensity.
The system rapidly weakened into a tropical low but more than 500mm of rain fell across coastal parts of the south-west Gulf of Carpentaria. The deluge led to major flooding at the remote town of Borroloola on the McArthur River.
The system has continued to bring rainfall to the NT, particularly in central and southern parts of the region, as it moved toward the WA border while further weakening.
The Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation, which declared an event for Megan, said the cyclone ended last Tuesday at 7am (AEST), with the claims period ending 48 hours later on Thursday.
The Bureau of Meteorology also last week said that Tropical Cyclone Neville had formed well off the WA coast.
Neville, which had moved eastwards as a tropical low before reversing direction, became the sixth cyclone to be named this season in the Australian region. The system remained distant from coastal areas.
