El Nino still on the cards
An El Nino event remains a strong possibility over the coming months, the Bureau of Meteorology warns.
Its latest update says the Pacific Ocean has warmed in recent weeks, and four out of seven surveyed models suggest an El Nino is likely by the Australian summer.
The chance of one developing is at least 50% – double the normal likelihood.
Even if an event does not become fully established, El Nino-like conditions such as reduced rainfall and higher daytime temperatures can still occur.
