Drug-driving high among young males
One in four men under the age of 25 has admitted to taking illicit drugs and driving, according to a survey by specialist insurer AAMI.
The news comes as Victoria police prepare to start random roadside drug testing trials this month.
Young men have long been acknowledged as the most dangerous on the roads. Participants in the survey admitted to driving at some time under the influence of recreational drugs like marijuana, cocaine, speed and ecstasy.
Under-25 male drivers are three times more likely than their female counterparts to drive under the influence of drugs.
AAMI Public Affairs Manager Geoff Hughes says 90% of Australians support random drug testing and recognise that taking drugs and driving is as serious as drink driving.
