Dodgy insulation raises insurance concerns

GIO has moved to clarify its position following consumer fears that insurers won’t pay out if dodgy home insulation jobs result in a house fire.

More than 100 house fires have been attributed to insulation in the wake of the Federal Government’s home insulation program, which was rolled out to 1.1 million houses.

Over the past week media reports have suggested insurers won’t pay out if fires are attributed to the scores of dodgy insulation jobs undertaken across the country.

GIO Personal Insurance Corporate Affairs Manager Monica Vardabasso says the insurer will examine claims on a case-by-case basis.

“It is the same as any other claim,” she told insuranceNEWS.com.au. “If insulation has been installed in line with the proper guidelines, customers are covered. If there is doubt we will review it case by case.”

Other personal lines insurers declined to comment when approached by insuranceNEWS.com.au.
