Disaster costs continue to rise
The estimated cost to insurers of Cyclone Yasi has topped $1 billion, according to figures published by the Insurance Council of Australia on Friday.
The previous listing of costs from the summer catastrophes was published on April 21, with the revised figures indicating the claims costs are continuing to rise.
Cyclone Yasi claims have increased by 3100, with the estimated value rising from $967 million to $1.09 billion.
The number of claims for the Toowoomba and Lockyer Valley floods has risen from 52,683 to 56,200, with the estimated cost falling slightly from $2.6 billion to $2.55 billion.
Claims from the Victorian floods of December-January have risen from 6713 to 7500, with the estimated cost rising from $83 million to $104 million.
The severe storms in Melbourne and suburbs in February are now expected to cost $370 million, compared with the April estimate of $316 million. The number of claims has also risen from 41,247 to 48,000.
