Cyclone sweeps across remote northwest coast

Cyclone Dianne crossed WA’s Kimberley coast early on Saturday, bringing heavy rain and flash flooding.

The storm reached the shore north of Derby at category 1 intensity, bringing more than 170mm of rain to the town over the weekend as the system weakened and moved southeast.

Parts of WA’s remote northern and southern interior could have flash flooding today, with six-hourly rainfall totals of 30-50mm likely and isolated totals of up to 90mm, the Bureau of Meteorology says. Over 24 hours, isolated falls of up to 150mm are possible.

The cyclone reinsurance pool has declared a 65-hour claims period, with the event beginning at 5pm on March 28 and ending today at 10am (AEST).

The cyclone season runs from November 1 to April 30.
