Cyclone numbers below long-term season average
The number of Australian-region tropical cyclones in the season just finished was below the long-term average, the Bureau of Meteorology says.
The season, which runs from November 1 to April 30, featured eight cyclones compared to the average of 11, while around 20 tropical lows were also observed, including one that brought significant rainfall to north-western Australia at the end of January and start of February.
Two cyclones made landfall on mainland Australia, while two that reached severe strength remained offshore.
In late December, Cyclone Tiffany developed in the Coral Sea and weakened as it crossed northern Queensland before strengthening again in the Gulf of Carpentaria and making another landfall over the NT in January.
Annika developed in the Timor Sea and crossed WA’s north Kimberley coast at category 2 intensity in late February. It then made a second landfall as a category 1 system over the far west Kimberley coast in early March.
