Cyclone expected to steer clear of WA coast
A tropical low that is forecast to reach cyclone strength off the WA coastline is expected to remain offshore and travel west as it intensifies.
The Bureau of Meteorology says the low is well north of Broome today and moving west-southwest. It could reach cyclone strength tomorrow night and may hit category 3 later in the week as it tracks away from the mainland.
A tropical low may also develop in the Arafura Sea or Gulf of Carpentaria during the week. There is uncertainty over where and when it may form and move.
“If it stays over water, it may develop, either in the eastern Arafura Sea or Gulf of Carpentaria, and has a low chance of developing into a tropical cyclone from Wednesday,” the bureau says.
The Australian cyclone season runs from November 1 to April 30.
